Cooking

One of the interesting things about the kind of diet I am doing is that I dont' have to give up any food I like. The downside is I have to cook it.

http://www.annamariavolpi.com/pizza_recipe.html Has a pizza dough recipe I like to use.

With http://caloriecount.about.com/ I can look at what goes into that recipe and find out how many calories total are in the dough

1 tablespoon Active Dry Yeast = 0 calories
1 1/2 cups Water = 0 calories
3 1/2 cups Flour =  1593 calories (ouch!)
1 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive oil (15 g)= 120 calories
Pinch of Salt = 0
I also add a teaspoon of sugar (~5g) to help the yeast work faster = 16 calories

This makes the calories in the amount of dough I'm making to 1729 calories. That makes about 3 pizzas. Remember this is JUST the dough. at about 576 calories per pizza dough.

I should also point out that if you, say make 5 smaller pizzas you'd have less calories of dough ( 345.8)

I'm planning on using this to make home made pizza pockets to pack for lunches at work (getting tired of wraps), so I don't know exactly how much i will get out of this, but i'll update later with a report

After words you have to add the amount of calories on your toppings.

Update 1: I made 8 equal sized pizza pop dough circles which means about  216 cal per pop with just the dough. Pepporoni, cheese and sauce will be added soon.

Update 2: As per fillings, today i used 15 ml of sauce = 11 cal
                                                              15 g of cheese = 50 cal
                                                               6 g pepperoni = 33 cal

This makes the total amount of calories per pizza pop is 310 calories , which is actually pretty high. One plus a salad and some milk will probably be a fill meal. I hope they're filling...

The Importance of Preparation

I was going to start counting calories today.

It didn't happen, not because I didn't try but because I did.

Let me explain. I was all ready to count calories and I did for breakfast (about 600 calories) and it wasn't enough. Not even with my midmorning snack (about 150). I started getting dizzy around 12 pm, an hour and a half from lunch. Not good.

So I got home from work and ate a full (undisclosed) meal. Why did I fail today? I was not prepared. I should have planned my meals out better. I think the main issues was that my breakfast didn't fill me. I was going to make a protein shake tomorrow to go with some grains but then i found that my blender is missing *sigh*.

So what was the lesson? I need to prepare my house and plans more than I did. I need to get a blender for sure, I need to get tools to measure my progress (a scale and measuring tape come to mind) . Lastly, and i think this is most important, I need to plan out some meals and how many calories I can account to each meal.

Not to say I'm not doing better. I resolve to not buy any fast food lunches for this week and make everything at home. As we all should know, eating out is not that great every day, which I sadly have been doing. So many calories you'll never know about.

Speaking of calories....

The internet is full of calorie calculators, I used http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm today. Putting my numbers in, for weight loss at my (currently low) level of excercise, I can eat about 2800 calories a day to loose weight constantly. When the workouts begin (shout out to Bort) my count will go up due to increased energy demands from my body. I read somewhere that you are to recalculate every 5 lbs you loose to make up for the calories that the body burns to maintain itself (fat cells included)

First time

Hello if anyone is reading this. My name is Carlos and I'm starting this blog so that I can keep track of my own fitness and dietary goals more easily.

I've been overweight all of my life and finally sick of it. I'm going to try a tried and true method of weight loss : calorie counting and exercising. Fortunately I am probably going to get a workout buddy in the near future. I also took a bit of nutrition courses in university for my degree. So armed with calorie counters and dumbells, I will in the near future be off on my way to (hopefully) a healthier life.

If anything I do helps anyone, that is great, but my main goal is to motivate myself by posting this online so the whole world can watch me succeed or fail

So thank you (possible) future readers for well...reading

Carlos
